Install nanobot: Complete Installation Guide

Choose your installation method and get started

Three installation methods, one ultra-lightweight AI assistant

nanobot System Requirements

The nano bot has minimal system requirements. If your system runs Python 3.10+, you can run nanobot ai without issue.

Python 3.10+ (Required)

The nanobot requires Python 3.10 or higher. This version introduced features that the nano bot depends on for its architecture. Check your version with python --version.

Install Python: python.org/downloads

Operating Systems

Linux: All major distributions (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch, etc.)
macOS: Intel and Apple Silicon supported
Windows: Windows 10, Windows 11

The nanobot ai is pure Python and platform-independent.

Memory and Storage

RAM: Approximately 100MB (estimated)
Disk: Minimal space for code and dependencies

The nano bot is 10x more memory-efficient than OpenClaw's ~1GB RAM usage. Perfect for low-spec systems and cloud deployment.

Network Requirements

Internet: Required for LLM API calls and messaging platforms
Bandwidth: Minimal data usage

The nanobot ai needs connectivity for cloud LLM providers. Local models via vLLM reduce network dependency.

Install nanobot via PyPI (Stable)

The recommended installation method for most users. Install the nano bot from PyPI for stable, tested releases of nanobot ai.

pip install nanobot-ai

Installation Steps

  1. Open your terminal or command prompt
  2. Ensure Python 3.10+ is installed (python --version)
  3. Run: pip install nanobot-ai
  4. Wait for installation to complete (~30 seconds)
  5. Verify with python -c "import nanobot"

Why PyPI?

Stable Releases: Only tested versions published
Easy Updates: pip install --upgrade nanobot-ai
Official Package: Maintained by HKUDS
Dependency Management: Automatic

Virtual Environment (Recommended)

python -m venv nanobot-env
source nanobot-env/bin/activate # Linux/Mac
nanobot-env\Scripts\activate # Windows
pip install nanobot-ai

Use virtual environments to isolate the nano bot installation from other Python projects.

Install nanobot via uv Tool

Install the nano bot using uv, an ultra-fast Python package installer. Same stable releases as PyPI, but with dramatically faster installation speeds.

uv tool install nanobot-ai

What is uv?

uv is a next-generation Python package installer written in Rust. It's 10-100x faster than pip for package installation. Perfect for quickly setting up the nanobot ai.

Install uv: github.com/astral-sh/uv

Installation Steps

  1. Install uv: curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh
  2. Run: uv tool install nanobot-ai
  3. The nano bot will be installed in seconds
  4. Verify installation successfully completed

Benefits of uv

Speed: 10-100x faster than pip
Reliability: Better dependency resolution
Same Packages: Uses PyPI, same nanobot versions
Modern: Built with Rust for performance

uv vs pip

Both install the same nanobot ai package from PyPI. The difference is speed and tooling. Use uv if you want blazing-fast installations. Use pip for maximum compatibility.

Install nanobot from GitHub Source

Install the nano bot directly from the GitHub repository for the latest development version. Best for developers, contributors, and those who want cutting-edge nanobot ai features.

git clone https://github.com/HKUDS/nanobot.git
cd nanobot
pip install -e .

Installation Steps

  1. Ensure git is installed (git --version)
  2. Clone: git clone https://github.com/HKUDS/nanobot.git
  3. Navigate: cd nanobot
  4. Install in editable mode: pip install -e .
  5. The nano bot is now linked to the source code

Why Install from Source?

Latest Features: Get unreleased improvements
Development: Modify and test changes
Contributing: Required for pull requests
Learning: Read the ~4,000 lines of nanobot code

Updating Source Installation

cd nanobot
git pull origin main
pip install -e .

Pull the latest changes from the nanobot ai repository and reinstall. The -e flag keeps the installation linked to your local source.

Verify nanobot Installation

After installing the nano bot, verify the installation was successful and check which version of nanobot ai you have.

Check Version

python -c "import nanobot; print(nanobot.__version__)"

This should print the nanobot version number (e.g., v0.1.3.post7). If you see a version number, the nano bot is installed correctly.

Test Import

python -c "import nanobot; print('nanobot installed successfully!')"

Simple import test for the nanobot ai. If this runs without errors, your installation is working.

List Installed Packages

pip list | grep nanobot

Shows the nanobot package in your pip installed packages. Useful for confirming the nano bot is in your Python environment.

nanobot Configuration Setup

After installing the nano bot, you need to configure LLM providers, messaging platforms, and other settings. The nanobot ai uses configuration files for all settings.

Configuration Files

The nanobot stores configuration in your home directory or project directory. Create configuration files for:

  • LLM provider API keys and settings
  • Messaging platform credentials (Telegram, Discord, etc.)
  • Tool configurations
  • Memory system settings
  • Cron job definitions

LLM Provider Setup

Configure at least one LLM provider for the nano bot. Supported providers include:

  • OpenRouter (multiple models, one API key)
  • Anthropic (Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku)
  • OpenAI (GPT-4, GPT-3.5)
  • DeepSeek, Google Gemini, Zhipu, and 6+ more

Add your API keys to the nanobot ai configuration.

Platform Credentials

Set up messaging platforms for the nanobot:

  • Telegram: Bot token from @BotFather
  • Discord: Bot token from Discord Developer Portal
  • WhatsApp: Business API credentials
  • Slack: Bot token and app credentials
  • Others: Email, QQ, DingTalk, Feishu, Mochat
